STOP WORSHIPPING NUMBERS — START STUDYING BEHAVIOR
By Blog 45, the independent artist should understand that modern music marketing produces enormous amounts of data.
Streams.
Views.
Likes.
Shares.
Saves.
Followers.
Clicks.
Pre-saves.
Comments.
Playlist placements.
The danger is becoming addicted to numbers without understanding what they represent.
A metric is useful only when it helps answer a business question.
Did the campaign reach the correct audience?
Did listeners care?
Did they return?
Did they explore the catalog?
Did they follow?
Did they subscribe?
Did they purchase?
Did the marketing create a relationship?
That is the deeper analysis.
THE LISTENER QUALITY FUNNEL
Think about streaming behavior as a progression:
Impression → Click → Stream → Completion → Save → Repeat Listen → Profile Visit → Catalog Exploration → Follow → Fan
Not every listener will move through every stage.
But the further somebody travels, the stronger the relationship may become.
The objective is not merely generating the first stream.
The objective is creating enough value that the listener chooses the second.
DATA SHOULD CREATE QUESTIONS
Good analytics do not simply give answers.
They create better questions.
Why is Chicago responding more strongly than Los Angeles?
Why did one video produce more saves?
Why did one playlist create followers while another did not?
Why are people replaying one song?
Why is traffic dropping after the first 20 seconds of a video?
Those questions help artists improve.
MR. DOPE CHEF MOGUL PRINCIPLE
Numbers should document real momentum—not manufacture the illusion of it.
Build songs people replay.
Build content people share.
Build campaigns people remember.
Build communities people return to.
Then allow the data to tell the story.
